Issues with the book machine usually arise because the books were not properly handled. In order to check in/out a book properly you need to:
 
1. put the edge of the book toward the machine, away from yourself, and
2. the barcode down toward the flat of the machine
(if you cannot do this, maybe becasue the bercode is inside the book, please check in/out the book at the information desk instead)
3. calmly slide the book all the way to the red knob until it hits stop
 
If this is not done properly the alarm will not be removed from the book, and you may get an error message on the screen saying that the book "was not properly hanled" or that it has to be checked in/out once more.
